in the game i'm currently playing in, we're just now hitting 5th level and we've been averaging the standard 4-5 rounds per combat. this is even for the major "boss monster at the end of the level" type encounters -- and i've been keeping track of the number rounds because i play a barbarian and i need to know when my rage runs out. (i've never had a combat last longer than my rage yet -- dwarf barbarian with 18 Con = 9 rounds of rage.

in our last session, we had three or four encounters in a row that took 1 or 2 rounds. at one point, we had three encounters combined where the DM made a grand total of one enemy attack roll.
