how long does it take to break a wild horse?

I use DC 15 unless the horse is special then I add +5.

Note: The players must have animal handling skill to break an animal. Riding does not give it to you.

Breaking? I haven't the foggiest.

Gentling? A few hours, but you have to know how to talk to them.:D

damn straight. I'd have completely different DCs (and results) for folks trying to use ride/intimidate combinations, vs handle animal, vs animal empathy. Charm animal might work better than indicated above if you are smart enough to use the charmed time to get close to the horse and demonstrate your good intentions. Speak with animals could obviously also speed things up.

However, if your players true intent is to "break" these animals... ride checks at high dcs and maybe some indimidate to back it up, couple a weeks?

If you really want to challenge them, put them up againt a dead horse.

After all...

...you can't beat a dead horse...

Au contraire, my friend. You need look no further than this very forum to prove that statement incorrect.

As to the OP, I can think of little else to add. But I would focus on the distinction of whether you are training a horse to be your "partner" or your "servant".

1% chance that you have an absolutely nuts horse, best set free, or used for breeding. No one can even get near him/her.

Don't forget meat is meat. If the Pc's are so poor they are trying to break a wild horse a bad failure could at least supply some rations.

depends on your skill level as many people have already said...it also depends on the horse, and how hard that you push it....but just about any horse can be green broken in two days or so...if you really keep on them.
