The year was 1981 and my dad was pretty popular around his work for creating a text based adventure game running on the mainframes as work. his birthday rolled along (May) and his coworkers did this cool spread of a foam based landscaped with all sorts of miniatures to represent creatures in his game. (The standard goblins and ghouls and skeletons with a few dragons sprinkled in for fun.) They also gave him a copy of the red box Basic Set. Well, he really didn't seem that interested in it, but I devoured the book. A few months later I convinced my family into letting me run a game for them running Haunted Keep in the back of the rulebook. I was 7. I've been gaming ever since.

Around 1979 for me, though I really never played seriously until college, with a few exceptions. I was in a game for a bit in 1986 - by 1989 and school I was gaming at least two times a week. Those were the golden years of gaming for me.
