How long to Sunder the Evil Sword?

i mean... how do avg str commoners without power attack mine?

a pick doesn't do enough damage on solid rock. and don't even talk about a crowbar or hammer...

Incorrect.

A military pick - a weapon based on a miner's pick, but constructed and most importantly weighted differently - does not generally do enough damage to overcome the hardness of rock.

But that's okay, because a military pick isn't meant to be used against rock. It's meant to be used against people, who have a much lower hardness score.

A miner's pick would have vastly different stats than a military pick - and would likely always be an improvised two-handed weapon.

so it is an exotic weapon.... dang...edit: i think mattock would work better for the stats.

Nah, improvised.

It's completely unsuitable for use as a weapon, rather than "needs special training to be used as a weapon."

Improvised Weapons: Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. An improvised weapon scores a threat on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a critical hit. An improvised thrown weapon has a range increment of 10 feet.

In earlier mining threads, I've generally based my assumptions around a miner's pick being two-handed, 1d12 20/x2 improvised weapon.

Accordingly, it takes a single, normal human miner (10-11 Str) 1.8 hours of constant swinging (1 attack per round) to cut a 5'x5'x5' niche in basic stone. A half-orc miner (12-13 Str) can do the same in 1.2 hours.

If assume rest periods, 1 swing every other round, etc., you get something relatively reasonable.

Dwarves are better miners than humans because, although they aren't natively stronger, they can go for longer periods without rest.

...there shouldn't be any problem with selling an Unholy sword. Unless you expect the buyer to use it on you, that is.

Also, you can sell it, and then go and hunt down the (presumably evil) buyer and take his stuff.

Now, for a method that doesn't scream alignment violation, if you've got artificers in the campaign, sell it to one for parts. Heck, commission a weapon and have the artificer strip the unholy greatsword for the XP.

But are all good people good?

Yes.

I'd look at trying to redeem it, BoED-style. Otherwise, more destructive things come to mind. Instead of just smashing it with another sword, you might look to see if there's something Lord of the Rings-ish that you could do, like throwing it into a fiery chasm (that should prevent anyone from reforging it at lower cost).

Also out of the random-idea-hat, you could try using it to lure evil to you, if your party doesn't find that reprehensible. Keep it somewhere and spread rumours of an evil sword of great power, and see who comes to take it...you might meet a great ally, or you might meet a great enemy.
