How many books do you use?

Man-thing

First Post
I recently began to write up my 3rd level character to send into Iron Crown as asked to in the thread

http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109621

When I realized for a level 3 guy, I'm using quite a few books and would be using more but my DM said a few of the things I wanted were not available where we are adventuring and stil my character looks like this:

The bard that is known as Farnir to his friends is an exuberant individual. Farnir must always be the center of attentive and has adopted the practice of adding titles to his name for each memorable encounter he has. When meeting new people he always talks first in his party and always refers to himself by his full title. In his youth he met a very young copper dragon who taught him some High Draconic (The true language of power that dragons use to spellcast) but this has taken a toll on this learning and he does not possess as many spells as he should for a bard of his level. He plays the Tambourine of Death which is both a music instrument and a weapon as the tiny cymbals are razor sharp. He has lost this tambourine once while fighting a crystal viper in the desert and had to resort to slapping his tummy to keep a rhythm. After nearly being killed by the crystal viper (a naturally invisible viper) he learned to put his ear to the ground and sense any creature within 30 ft. Farnir’s only magic item is a small cone that allows him to project his voice 30 ft, which he uses to mimic the sounds of dragons and intimidate opponents. Slingscones are a Halfling breakfast item and sling ammunition.

Do other people use this many resources or am I just crazy for a 3rd level character.

As long as its allowed by the DM and it makes sense for the character I will you as many resources as it takes. Some times my ideas take a book or two but other times I've been known to pull things froma dozen different books and resources. I have the books, why would I not use them?

The more the merrier!

As long as your GM allows all the books, of course.

I do not use a lot of books when building up a character. The PHB and usually an FR source book as most of my characters live in the Realms.

I think your character is actually nice, although I don't know many of the noncore bits it seems to me that you did your choices more for fun, which is a good thing.

Anyway, usually I use materials from PHB and a couple of extra books for each character, but there is no problem of sort about using more.

One thing I'd be less open about would be if the material from different publishers seem to synergy, in the sense that it gave two improvements to the same thing, which most of the time is not a wanted thing.

Let's see

One is just srd

One is srd, creature collection revised, and burok Torn

One is Mythic Races, SRD, and Unearthed Arcana.

One is srd, Magic of Faerun, FR CS, OA, Quintessential wizard, homebrew, Complete Book of Eldritch Might, Relics and Rituals, Tome and Blood, d20 Modern. Although I'm trying to get some stuff out of Into the Blue approved by the DM.

For the one character I currently play, I sue two books: the PH and Magic of Faerun. I have not picked up the Complete Arcanist yet, but I have a feeling that I will end up using something from it at some point.

I find I do not have the time or the $$$ to explore lots of books and find all the fun and interesting things out there.
