How many characters in your party, then and now?

Pre-3e: 3 PCs on average. Not counting occasional guest players, or the big gamestore game mentioned in the previous poll.

Post-3e: 5 PCs on average, with a cast of NPC allies some of which are with the party for extended periods, so we'll call that 7. Again, not counting occasional guest players, etc.

The only real change in my game groups seems to be a trend toward fewer party-member NPCs, but even that isn't universally true.
