D&D 4E How many gamers even know there will be a 4e?

My targetted group of players had even forgotten that they'd even moved to 3.5. About a week after 4E was announced I told them, since I knew they did NOT know - their concerns are for WoW, not D&D. The reaction was... interesting. One player, though he hasn't ACTUALLY played in 4 years seemed to immediately dislike even the idea of it. Like it was an annoyance to him that such a thing could happen - even though he wasn't even playing the game at the time. A few days later he'd stopped in to a bookstore or gamestore somewhere and told me he'd seen "the new version" of D&D on the shelf. I had to explain to him that this was 3.5.

"When did they do that?"

"YEARS ago. 2003, maybe?"

Another player hasn't been in the game at all since 1E so it would all be new to him anyway. Yet another just wants to play the same ranger/archer character shes always played and won't otherwise care.

NONE of them are really AWARE of 4E, even though I've told them it's coming. That will change with time but it will definitely be just me who keeps on top of the changing times.

Gee that was nice of your "FLGS" to tell you.

Yeah, wasn't it just? I guess they were trying to dump 2e material. Still sucked, though.

On the plus side, a few weeks later, they sold all their 2e stuff at dirst cheap prices (and I mean, CHEAP - 75% off). And I got me a copy of JAKANDOR and some Dark Sun stuff. So that was kind of cool.

Even in this age of the internet, there are a good few who wont know it's coming.
In my town there are alot of gamers/ I know most of them, and wouldnt play with half of them. However, i have interacted with a fair amount since the 4e announcement. Only my group knew about it, and that was only because I told them. I dont think those who dont actively visit game sites or message boards are going to know.

I suspect that anyone with ties to the gaming community knows about 4E.

I ran into a fellow gamer on Friday who had stopped playing DND and started playing another game system. He was unaware of 4E.

It really depends on word of mouth or actually going to various Internet sites at this point.

Robert Jordan died last Sunday and even though I have re-read books 1 through 10 of WoT so far this year, I was unaware of his death until after our gaming session last night and that only happened because I ran a WoT-like campaign last year that we started discussing.

Information travels slowly for people not intimately keeping current on a certain topic. I think there will be a few 3.5 gamers who will not be aware of 4E until they see it in the stores. Not many, but a few.
