How many levels?

How many levels? All of them.

Really, D&D has been successful with 10 levels to 36 levels. It's not the number of levels that counts; it's the amount of adventure you pack into each level.

I'd personally put the target at around 20, though.

I like to see 30 with 'epic' after that.

I real question with levels in DDN is how they address the narrow sweetspot problem which bedeviled many editions of D&D. I am assuming the lower range of bonuses is the key with respect to this problem - but I would like to see what else they are thinking about this.

I'd like about 20. 1-10 should be the power level seen in most fantasy novels. 11-20 should be superhero WAHOO!-land, for the folks that enjoy such. I'd also like a AD&D-style option to essentially cap out at 10 with only minor progression thereafter/

It should be designed to have an open-ended number of levels of which only the first 12 or so are expected to ever be played. The higher levels are for villains, overlords, and play groups/DMs who want to play at very high levels and are willing to work to bend the system to make it playable there.

To make the game last, design for a very slow progression through those 12-ish levels.

That's pretty much what I want, and develop later books for advancement beyond 10th for other books, where they can be done "right".

I'll jump on the d20 bandwagon and say/guess 20 in the core [hardback] book would be good.

With the full and complete knowledge that any group I game with/for will likely not play beyond 12 or 15.

And also, to reiterate what several others have said, a separate "20+" or 20-30 (or 40, 50, who knows) "Epic Players Handbook" for those who like/want that super ultra mega-hero demigod kinda game.

Now, that said, I would LIKE to see the initial "basic simple core" set (cuz I wants my red box ;) "Beginners" set) just cover 1-10...with, then, an "Expert" set for 10-20...(or 1-5, 5-10 and 10-20...however they want to break it up) and then the "Epic/Legendary play set" (20+) after that. I know I'd get all three...just to have whether I ever use them or not.

But I also want/expect that the hardcover "official Advanced Players Handbook" will have 1-20 all included within a single cover.

I think this is a very good idea. We usually end up playing the lower levels a lot more than the higher levels, so instead of having PHB 1-3 covering the same levels, you could have different PHB's covering different levels of the game.
