How many official and D20 Feats are there? Which ones are worth taking?

I am informed that there are around 2,000 official (published directly by WOTC) feats.
Is this true?
How many unofficial feats are there, then, from Dragon Magazine, Dungeon Magazine, Polyhedron Magazine, and the like?
And how many un-unofficial feats are there from the many d20 supplements?

Which of these Feats are actually worth having? A character is allowed but so many feats, and should choose wisely. Which of these Feats grants the most (pick your poison: roleplaying opportunities or min/maxing the character) for your player character?

2,000 is probably about right if you cound all the older 3.0 books as well. But it's probably closer to 500-1000, and most of them are worth taking at least in part due to some kind of character concept. There are probably only about 100 or so that are fairly generic enough to be good in a large number of concepts, and probably only 20 that are good for just about any character.

Check out http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/index.php

There is a zip file and PDF's for all aspects of D&D, the feats file has feats from both official and unofficial sources. Its 173 pages of feats with a nice index in the back.

Edit: went back and double checked, its 184 pages now. Also. the 3.0 page http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules3.0.php has several variations worth checking out - all d20 settings, all sources, and a flowchart for feats.

When I first read about feats (and to a lesser extend PrCs), I thought:

"On no. Now they've REALLY opened up Pandora's Box and they will never shut it again."

And it's true. Some of my players will spend hours reading feats and PrCs when we are designing new characters for a game. It is nearly impossible anymore to just put together low level characters in a half hour and play. It typically takes us the better part of an entire gaming session, just to create new characters.

What's worse is when a player finds a PrC he wants months after starting a campaign and he finds out that his PC does not qualify for it because he has the wrong feats.

A couple weeks ago, WotC put out their compiled list of feats from all their books - a total of 2240+. Some of these feats were listed twice or more, depending on the source/edition (3.0/ 3.5). I've trimmed the list down to 2135, getting rid of the duplicated duplicates, but it is far from complete.

Now imagine all the other fears out there from 3rd party publishers. It's kinda mind-boggling...

Only if one assumes that all the feats are going to be looked at. First a person would have to have all these books and that's just not the case. Even DMs with lots of bnooks should restrict the players in some way unless they can prove they can use the resources quickly. If my players were like Karendad's and took forever lookingthrough things I'd restrict the books since the players are being overwelmed.

I do restrict them.

Core, Complete, XPH, and Forgotten Realms (course, that's still about 10 books)

No third party stuff. No Races book. No Oriental books or classes.

But, they still take forever, partially because some of them are extremely slow.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm starting a new campaign for 2 of my players today, experimenting wirh gestalt characters, and one player has been working on his character for the last 4 days.
