How Many Rares in a case?

Does anyone have a link to a resource on the Breakdown of rares and uncommons in the cases of D&D minis? I'm thinking of jumping into Desert of Desolation and Dungeon of Dread, and I'm wondering what my chances of a full set are from one or two cases.

Does anyone know how I should go about getting back into trading my unwanted minis from older D&D minis sets? I have a scattering of them, a few rares, a lot of commons an uncommons.

Each booster pack should have one rare. So just compute how many packs are in a case then you have the number of rares.

http://www.blackguard.ca/merric/ is also the best place for D&D Miniatures information.

There should be in the site some more complex explanations on how the uncommons, and commons are distributed. I remember for the earlier expansions, if there are 3 uncommons in a booster pack, the 1st uncommon slot has a list of possible uncommons you can get, the 2nd uncommon slot has another list, etc.

I remember in the case of Miniatures with Huge sizes, since they're just few in number and are included in each pack, you can get an entire set by purchasing two consecutive cases (Case 001 and 002, but not 002 and 003, although 003 and 004 would work).

For a typical set with 24 R / 24 U / 12 C, one case should net you:

  • 12 different Rares (although there are erroneous cases with multiples of the same rare in a case - I got one such in War Drums and haven't bought any cases since)
  • 1.5 of each Uncommon (in practice, you'll get doubles for one half of the Uncommons and singles for the other half, although it's not unusual to get one Uncommon in triplicate)
  • 4 of each Common

I get two cases and end up missing about 6 rares, and having duplicates of 6 rares. I like that balance, because it means I usually end up with a duplicate of a neat rare monster like a gorgon or dragon, and I don't feel like I've wasted a lot of money only to get five of a crappy rare.

As far as trades, normally I would link you to Miniature Market's buy list, but it looks like they're currently repricing it and it probably won't be as generous as it once was.

Each factory sealed case should get you:

12 different Rares (out of the 24 Rares in a set). Mistakes do occasionally happen but are relatively uncommon.

At least 1 of each of the 24 Uncommon minis in the set. You should also get doubles of 12 of the 24 Uncommon minis.

4 each of the 12 Common minis.

The way the boosters are distributed in cases now, unless there is a mistake (or it isn't a factory sealed case), the Common and Uncommon minis should be evenly distributed in each case. Therefore, if you got a second case, between the 2 cases you should have 2-4 of each Uncommon and 8 of each Common. If you have anything outside of this then either WotC stuffed up their case distribution or you didn't get a factory sealed case.

Rares, on the other hand, are a randomly distributed. If you got 2 cases then, on average, you could expect to get 18 of the 24 Rares in the set, Of course, having said that, it is possible (but unlikey) that you would be able to get all 24 Rares by buying 2 cases. There is also the (again unlikely) chance that you get doubles of 12 Rares.

I do not know if charlesatan is correct in saying that you can get a complete set by buying 2 sequential cases. I hadn't heard that before. I did remember reading on Maxminis that someone got triples of 12 Rares from 3 cases in either the Unhallowed or Night Below release. I think something must have gone wrong with the Rare distribution for that to have happened.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. The sequential cases only applies to the Huge rares. At least that was the case in Giants of Legend.

No, upon re-reading your post, it is clear that you are only talking about Huge sets (of which there have only been 2 so far). I just overlooked it when I read your post! :heh: :o
