Now, of course, any setting book may very well be worth buying just to read. When I was a kid I loved reading the World of Greyhawk setting books, and as I said I find the Scarred lands stuff good reading. But it seems difficult to justify an RPG purchase if you have no plans on using it. Also, if I buy one setting book, I'll feel a pull to buy futher supplements to make the most out of the setting. If you doing that with multiple settings, that get's really costly.

OK, that's my vent. Anyone else going through these issues?
Nope, never. I only buy settings that I will use.

If you're just including d20, I have:
- Forgotten Realms
- Oriental Adventures
- Rokugan
- some SL city books
- Kalamar modules

And since people are insisting these are settings, I also have:
- Freeport
- Necropolis

I use all of them in my giant Forgotten Realms campaign. I will never, ever buy a book that won't see use in this campaign. My life is much too busy to both buying books I'll never use/read.

I enjoy reading setting material, and I mine it for ideas even if I'm not going to use it directly. For the last couple of years though, there's been so much directly useful stuff that I haven't bought into very many settings.

I own (3.0 and onwards only):

- Forgotten Realms (everything)
- OA & Rokugan (just the core books)
- Greyhawk (the two gazetteers)
- Scarred Lands (several peripheral books, but not the setting book)

I DM in the Realms, use OA & Rokugan for their excellent crunchy bits, and get almost no use out of my Greyhawk and Scarred Lands material. I used the Greyhawk books when I played in a Greyhawk campaign, and I enjoy reading the SL books but find some of the rules elements problematic.

Own

Kalamar
FR
OA
AU
Necropolis
D20 Modern
Greyhawk

I DM Greyhawk and play in the Realms. This Friday we are gonna start a new game with AU Races/Classes but not sure what setting mostly likely FR but the DM of that game likes Freeport so it could be there.

I own (3e):

Forgotten Realms (all of it)
Grewhawk (The LGG and D&DG)
Oriental Adventures
Kalamar
Wheel of Time
Urban Arcana
Ravenloft
Call of Cthulhu
Spycraft
Star Wars
Necropolis
Traveller

Definitely getting but not released/haven't picked up yet:

Dragonlance
Midnight
Babylon 5
Gamma World

I've used the FRCS, Greyhawk, Wheel of Time, Call of Cthulhu, Spycraft, and Star Wars.

There's tons of other books, including setting books, in the collection, but the main settings I would have more of a tendancy to look for when something new comes out are:

Forgotten Realms
Planescape (or planar-oriented)
Scarred Lands

I'm also really wanting, but don't yet have, the Freeport stuff.

Me and my girlfriend have the following:

Oriental Adventures
Call of Cthulhu D20
Forgotten Realms
Greyhawk

And we use them all ;-)

heh, I collect this stuff. It gets really scary if you include previous editions of D&D and other RPGs.

I plunder freely from everything but rarely get to use the settings. Part of the problem is that we rotate between 3 different DMs each with their own setting (FR, Greyhawk and home grown).
It doesn't leave much time for anything else.

-Scarred lands (Complete)
-Rokugan (About 25%?)
-Greyhawk
-Kingdoms of Kalamar
-Forgotten Realms
-D20 Modern
-Wheel of Time
-Slaine (Complete)
-Arcana Unearthed
-Dragonstar
-Midnight (Complete)
-Freeport (Complete)
-Starwars
-Spycraft (Some Shadowforce Archer books, but not much).
-The End
-Harn

I'm looking to buy 'Babylon 5' but will probably only purchase a used copy. I don't plan on buying Everquest or Warcraft but might if I see a very good price on either.

On the other hand while I have lots of setting books I really avoid most class books and most monster collections.

Heh, I'm just the opposite. I buy monster books before anything else. I wouldn't have jack from Kalamar if I hadn't recently picked up the Denizens book (although it wasn't the best monster book, it didn't suck either). Same thing with Scarred Lands since I picked up the Creature Collections shortly after the Ghelspad hardback come out (or the gazz, not sure which came out first). I think I'm just a creature junkie since I never have time in a campaign to use all the cool creatures.
