D&D 5E How Much D&D is To Much?

Legend
The last few weeks have been a bit hectic in terms of D&D. On Friday night I played in a sessions that lasted 5 hours (6:30-11:30pm approx), and then on Sunday DMed a 10 hour session (1:30pm-11:30pm). Monday was a public holiday but we often do an 8 our session on Sunday as opposed to a 10 hour one.

So 15 hours of 5E this week, the previous effort was around 14 hours. 42.5 hours is my working week, and I do a 4 hour MP online game as well. Last year we pulled off 5 sessions in one week. Multiple DMs kind of help in this regard.

My addiction gets worse. I might be looking at another 4 hour session in the mid week. This means 4 gaming nights a week. I'm not sure if this is a good idea though. The gmaing record so far is mostly home brewed but.

2 aborted attempts at HotDQ (TPK in Greenest)
Completed LMoP

Woah dude. That seems like an awful lot of D&D. It's meant to be escapism, but you are leaving no time to have anything to escape from (apart from work). I note that your gaming time does not include prep time either. Do you sleep? When do you have any other sort of fun?

I thought I used to play a lot when when had 2 sessions per week back in my early 20's.

As much as I'd love to play D&D more often, I think one fortnightly game as a player and two as a DM is enough for me. In fact, it may be a little too much, as I struggle to juggle two games sometimes. I can't do any advance prep really. I just take it one session at a time.

That being said, I wouldn't mind have a chance to actually play more than just once a fortnight.

When it stops being enjoyable, it's too much.

When it starts negatively impacting on the rest of your life, it's too much.

Otherwise, it boils down to a fairly simple question: would you rather be doing that, or something else instead?

When you start caring more about what happens to your PC in-game than what happens to your life out of game you have a problem. Or if you find yourself saying things like "No! Blackleaf!" I've only ever seen this become a real problem for one person in my many years of gaming. (And thankfully, it wasn't me)

If you have that much leisure time, then whether you fill it with reams of D&D, or other pursuits, matters only if it leads to burn-out.

If you *don't* have that much leisure time, and you're way over-budget on D&D, it's time to scale back...but then that would apply to anything!

So the question to ask yourself is, do you have that much leisure time?

No wife and kids, I guess?

With a full-time job, wife, and kids, I consider myself fortunate to play twice a week (Thursday 19-23, and Sunday 15-19).

But hey, if it makes you happy, why stop? I mean, it's not like you're on drugs... are you???

I play 8-12 hours a week in one long session. I play with my wife and adult kids though so.....it also doubles as family time.

If you can find a good group...grow your own!
