I think Indiana Jones presents a closer model to D&D physics than real life does. If Indy can survive a nuclear blast, then a D&D character sure can.
It doesn't need to do a trillion damage. Just 30 over a big area is enough to kill nearly everyone, with a few heroes surviving through dumb luck, heroism, and other "leading character" methods - just like they can survive a 200ft drop or being stabbed in the head with a 6-ft sword.
