within my campaign, our group rarely has time to focus on time consuming tasks (non-role-playing) between adventures.
usually, after one adventure is finished, within a week (game time) at most, another opportunity for adventure has arised. the DM has stated many times that our party does not have to investigate or partake of every adventure hook presented, but of course, what adventuring party would ever do a silly thing like that?

one of the results of never having enough "down time" is the inability to create magical items. i can only speak for our campaign, but other than creating "1-day" items like 1st-level wands, the opportunities to create more powerful magical items is almost nonexistant.
partly, this is because the DM doesn't want the party to sit around for months (game time) at a time and stock up on magical items. mostly, i think the DM has so many things planned for his campaign, that there is never enough "down time"
the most "down time" we ever had was somewhere between 2 weeks and month, within the game. other than that, we usually enter into one adventure after another.
how often does this occur in your campaign?
