How much $ per month do you spend on Gaming?

It's funny. Back when WOTC did their market research in the 90's, they identified a trend where gamers over the age of about 35 spend way less than those under 35. I wonder if that trend continues. It certainly does for me. Over the past ten years, every year, I've spent less and less on gaming. Now, I'm to the point where many months go by and I don't spend anything on gaming.

My guess for the $501 is minis, and possibly someone in the military; several military folks I knew spent a lot on games because "they didn't have much else to spend it on" while in the service.

Where do they keep it then?

Maybe they are counting storage as pasrt of the monthly spending?

My spending tends to reflect whether or not I'm actively gaming, and whether I'm DMing during that time.

When 3.x came out, I spent stooopid amounts of monies on books from a wide range of providers - and almost all were hard copy. With several moves in the last few years, I no longer have a gaming group, so my spending has dropped to almost nothing.

I had picked up the core books when 4th Edition came out, just to see what was up - but I was turned off by the system and bought nothing further.

Similarly, I picked up the Pathfinder core book recently - again, to see what they had done with the system. However, Pathfinder I liked so I ended up picking up a couple of the other books as well.

Though, not gaming, I am hard pressed to pick anything else up as I can't justify it to myself - especially with such a volume of 3.x books that I'm not using now.

So, because of those few books over the last year, I think that averages out to the lower bracket of 1-25$ per month.

I spend more towards the $50 end and that is almost completely running microlite20. The spare money I get has mostly been focused on board games recently.

I'd say I am currently in the 50-75 range.

Circa 2000; before the death of D&D 3E, I spent more than I'd care to currently remember. Let's just say that if 3E were a stripper, I probably helped her get through college.

At the beginning of 4E, I'd say I was spending an average of about 50 a month if I include misc gaming materials (pencils, pens, etc.) I liked the game, but I was too busy with work at the time to spend as much time with rpgs as I had previously. As time went on and I started to play the game more, I sharply declined into near $0 territory.

After picking up a different game system, I went back up toward values around the $30-$40 range. Thanks to the folks over at SJG putting out a stream of good quality pdfs throughout the majority of this year, I'm into the 50-75 range where I am now. It might be more once I am done buying gifts for the holiday season.

Two of the individuals I knew stored it in their car (seriously;you couldn't fit anything else in the trunk or back seats). The others, I have no idea as from what I understand military housing tends to be rather cramped.

I used an average, but really my $100 a month actually represents massive splurges. At Gen Con I dropped $800 - mostly on miniatures and scenery. This month I spent about $325 on games - mostly board games. Most months I spend zero or close to it.

A few years ago I averaged over 150 dollars a month

However, with the decline of 3.5 goodies, DDM sets and a regular game group I find myself now only buying 2 sets of DnD Tiles per set and a few figures as I need them with my kids game.

So now I guess I'm in the <25 dollar a month mark.


But I have a very solid 3.5 and 2e supplies so I'm not worried about running out of material to use.

I very much suspect so. As being over 40 myself, it is an issue of shoes for the kids and gaming. MOST months the kids win. Also there is the fact I have a large built up supply of books and resources coupled with less time to play with friends.


Many reasons for the cutting back but yeah- we do cut back in general. I would think that is the way with most hobbies.
