...for a well roleplayed political scene? (several antagonists and protagonists go head-to-head with the characters in the middle)
...for a well lead military victory? (0 rounds of actual combat for the characters. They did cast a few divinations, however.)
...for escaping an assassin? (again, no combat)
...for creating lasting and beneficial alliances? (good chances for political power, commerce and future contacts)
The list goes on and on, but the main thing is that I'm running a campaign that revolves heavily around roleplaying and next to no actual combat. One character actually did die, because he challenged a good swordsman to a duel (the character was heavily drunk at the time, but couldn't back down without serious loss of face), but he was resurrected afterwards (no sense in wasting an otherwise good nobleman).
The things is that none of the players actually know their XP-situation. I, the DM, keep the record and just inform them when a character levels up via email. Should someone want to create a magical item or cast a spell with XP cost (they aren't that high a level yet) then their characters can spend a day in mediation / prayer / song / study to find out if they have the required XP (which is time enough for me to check). Everything is going just fine, but I just haven't actually given any of the characters any XP for several sessions. I just level up the characters when I feel they deserve it.
I'm looking at the Unearthed Arcana for solutions, and want to create a Honor / Repuation dependant system, in which certain amount of Honor / Reputation (preferrably in combination) allows a character to level up and it also resets the count for the next level. If you have played Werewolf: The Apocalypse then you know what I'm talking about. Moving upwards in the werewolf social structure requires recognition in the eyes of their betters in three forms. A similar system might work out a whole lot better than simple XP for my campaign. I just haven't figured out the details yet.
So, could someone point me a suitable thread that covers this problem? If such a thread doesn't exist then could you help me out?
