Like Silver Moon and WayneLigon I am 41 (I know, I look MUCH younger! In college I was voted most likely to recede.). I have been gaming for almost 24 years now. Woohoo!

Yeah. It makes me wonder whether something is going to happen to me next September.

Next time we take a poll of the age of ENworld subscribers we ought to use age-bands of even width. Maybe

43...

i think it has more to do with the fact that gamers from 10 - 20 years ago are just starting to hit those age ranges. What worries me is the number of people in the teens and 20s. Where are all the new DMs/players?

Not to get off subject, but the game is massively more complex now than it was when I began. I also remember how hard it was to conceptually get over the idea that you don't have to know all the rules to play the game "correctly."

Coming from a more standard "games have set rules, these rules cannot change, if you do change the rules you're cheating" mentality, stepping into the role-playing mindset was hard enough before the almost 640 pages of rules a new DM has to know.

I guess, in short, the learning curve is steeper now. But even then, by this poll, roughly 1 out of 5 gamers is 21 or younger. Not to bad for such a complex game.

They are probably out there, but they don't have Internet accounts or don't frequent the boards.

Besides, the narrow bands at low ages and broad bands at higher ages are a classic way of lying with statistics.

No, please don't. I'm turning 30 tomorrow (January 5th), and that's hard enough as it is. At least I'm in the "26 to 30" range now and tomorrow. ;)

I look at it this way.

31-39: Are people that either started playing the game in the 70's around the time it came out or started it when they went to college.

26-30: Started playing the early 80's before the whole religious right attempted to stomp out the game.

22-25: Here I think you see such a dramatic drop off because of the fire and brimestone that was being thrown around.

21 and under: An increasing drop off I think caused by the huge explosion of other RPG games that hit the market in the 90's, especially WoD, the drew alot of players away from D&D. Also increased competition from VCR's and the Internet.

Of course what would really be interesting is to do a poll that cross referenced how old gamers were now and when they started gaming.

Will be 30 in this month. Just started getting into role-playing late last year though I knew of some friends who had played it when I was in junior high.

36 here. I got started with one edition or another of the basic box sets in 7th grade.
But I've gotten to pass the gaming on! Over the holiday I ran a game for my two nephews - one is 8 (he wasn't really too focused on the game itself but still had a fun time) and the other is in 7th grade.
