It's easy to use a tape measure and not grids..... doesn't mean people want to. I just don't want to use a calculator.

If you are using a VTT you have screens open anyway. Pretty easy just to punch in a few numbers. I find the tape-measure function more convenient than counting squares for VTTs too.
