D&D General How to make a Stealth Archer in 5e

Levy1995

Villager
I am making a stealth archer called him "Skyrim McElderscroll", in order to annoy the DM, an avid stealth archer in skyrim.
We are starting at level 3, and I want him to a dex-based fighter because I want heavy armor proficiency to complete the esthetic.
I want to make him VERY VANILLA and my background story is "horse thief turned accidental dragon slayer", so maybe the folk hero feat?
I'm trying to create this mister vanilla- so if anyone has any more ideas, I'm open for suggestions.

2014 or 2024? Champion fighter, archery fighting style. If 2024 then at level 4, Great Weapon Master for Heavy Weapon Mastery since a longbow has the heavy property. (add prof to damage).
Try and get Alert form your background.
You need Str 13 for GWM and Heavy Armor. Heavy Armor will give disadvantage in stealth. I would recommend medium and go with breastplate (no stealth disadvantage) looks similar and medium armor mastery for the extra point of Dex to AC.
Mage Slayer and Spell Sniper are also good feats in 2024.

In 2014, again I would recommend medium armor and Medium Armor Mastery and Sharpshooter.

If you are using the 2014 rules,

1. Pick a species that is naturally proficient with the Stealth skill such as the Bugbear or the Tabaxi.
2. Pick the Ranger class and use the optional feature Deft Explorer (Canny) to double the PB of your Stealth check.
3. As soon as you can afford it, get a Cloak of Elvenkind to gain Advantage with your Stealth checks.
4. Get the Alert feat and the Skulker feat.

For vanilla you could go with something like this provided the DM approves:

Name Skyrim McElderscroll
Species Human
Level 3 AC 16 HP 31
STR 12 DEX 16 CON 16
INT 10 WIS 13 CHA 08
Class Fighter
Subclass Champion
Background Criminal (Horse Thief)
Weapon Mastery Longbow, Shortsword, Scimitar
Feat Alert, Savage Attacker
Skills Animal Handling, Athletics, Perception, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
Tool Thieve's Tools
Equipment Traveler's Clothes, Mithral Chain Mail, Shortsword, Scimitar, Longbow, 40 Arrows, Quiver, 2 Daggers, Thieves' Tools, Dungeoneer’s Pack, 2 Pouches, 16 GP

....so, just going to point out the part I emphasized.

Not going to judge. Different table are different, and nuance is hard to convey. For example, I have a group of friends that I've played with for a long time and part of our love fun language is that we will needle each other occasionally, in good fun. Because we've known each other for a long time, we know what we're good with, and because we are all emotionally immature and that's easier than talking about our feelings and other icky stuff.

Um ... I did not mean that last part. I totally meant something else.

Anyway, before giving advice, I just want to make sure that when you write that you're doing this "in order to annoy the DM" what you really mean is that you want to create a character that everyone will find to be a humorous in-joke and appreciate. In addition, I hope the character is one that you actually want to play, because the enjoyment you might receive from a good-natured joke is temporary, and campaigns ... they last a while. For example, one time a person made a speciality-build character in a campaign (with accent at all) as a "joke." It was funny for five minutes. But the joke was really on the player who, by the second session, was begging to have a new character because they didn't actually want to play the joke they had designed. Jus' sayin'.

Now, with that out of the way, a few thoughts (assuming you are playing 5e14, due to your specific mention of 5e14 rules):

First, you're going to end up annoying the other players more than the DM. Let me explain- you're making a FIGHTER. In other words, one of the PCs that will be in combat a fair amount. But already, you're saying, "Naw, Ima be at range." Which, okay. But not just that, you're saying that you're going to be at range AND hidden while the other PCs are in melee, even though you're a fighter in heavy armor. So make sure you understand the aesthetic that the other players will be seeing in each combat as they're getting whomped on-

Your character, with all the hit points and the heavy armor, will be hanging back and hiding and going pew pew pew with a bow while they are engaged in melee combat. This might annoy the DM, but it will likely annoy the other players as well. It's not that you shouldn't do it, but make sure that the party composition supports it.

Second, I think @Plaguescarred gave you a great vanilla build that meets your criteria (although some things, like Mithril chainmail, will require DM approval). Remember the whole "armor and stealth" stuff. That said, if you really want to do a real stealth archer build that isn't just to annoy the DM, I would recommend what others have said and look to making a Rogue or Ranger that isn't heavily armored. Since you're using 5e14 rules, make sure you look at some of the added features in later supplements (such as the Rogue's steady aim in Tasha's) that would be applicable.
