I think there has to be some sort of trick to it.

He's using lighter fluid, Naphtha, which burns at about 675 degrees C. Cotton catches on fire at 200 C or so. Wicks (like for lighters.lamps) have to be specially treated to not burn up, they don't just use plain cotton.

Maybe he's done something to reduce the burning temperature?
 

I think it's pretty much the same reason why Bic lighters don't melt even tho they are cheap plastic...heat rises.
