how to make something silver

Adventurer
Other than the alchemical silver special material listed in the DMG, how else does one make a weapon "silver?"

I could have sworn there were spells (1st level transmutations maybe?) or alchemical 1-use items or something along those lines, but I can't find anything at the moment...

Fairly sure i remember reading a magical weapon bonus in the magic item compendium that after one hit would adjust the weapon to bypass certain types of dr. Dont own the book though so someone else will have to supply the specifics if you're interested

From Book of Exalted Deeds (pg 107)

Silvered Claws (Druid 1/Rang 1)
Silvered Weapons (Pal 1/Rang 1)
Spear of Valorian (Beloved of Valorian 4, Druid 5, Rang 4)

All are non-permanent duration though

There's a Quicksilver alchemical item in Complete Adventurer that turns it into a silver weapon for 3 rounds. Costs 50 gp. Not great bang for your buck compared to Silversheen, but cheaper.

There's definitely something in MIC as a weapon bonus, but I can't remember it either or check it. :heh:

The weapon enhancement is Transmuting. Once you hit a creature with the weapon it takes a round to adjust and counter the damage reduction. It will then be able to bypass that creature's damage reduction until you hit another creature with a different damage reduction. Then it will readjust to the new creature after one round.

That's the one, thanks! It's a +2 weapon property. The switching between different types of damage reduction can get weird if you're facing multiple opponents with different kinds of DR. Best to stick to one creature at a time.

Welcome to the boards, BTW, Hyperfist! :)

Thank you all so much - those are exactly the things I was looking for.

(Side observation: so it's cheaper to just make a longsword alchemical - 90g - rather than use an item that only lasts for an hour - 250g. Interesting. I guess the -1 to damage really is a steep penalty.)

Bear in mind that while Silversheen is in effect, you'll also take the -1.

But the advantage is that you're not taking that hit the vast majority of the time.

At low levels, you're better off just having a silver backup weapon. You're paying an extra hundred gold or so for the versatility, instead of 250 for a vial of Silversheen.

But at higher levels, when your primary weapon costs tens of thousands of gold pieces, you lose a lot of power if you have to switch to a +1 silver longsword as a backup; that's where Silversheen is useful.
