How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

Some people do put more stock in "This is the TRADITIONAL way to do it".

I can't cite an example. I just know I've seen it done: citing the 1e DMG, or one of Gary's quotes, and then saying, "See? That's how it is. The end."

Yeah, I've seen that with fair frequency here from certain posters.

Citing an example would basically be calling someone out and frankly that's rude, nor am I sure why it would be necessary.

A couple of times on different threads I've wanted to post a comment but, ultimately, he can't respond so it really isn't fair to post a disagreement and/or criticism. It's the time to do the internet equivalent of just walking away....

This extends to things like "School wars". If you go on Dragonsfoot, they refer to 3etards and 4orons. I am certain that you can easily find people, even those here, that think Old School is the only way to do it, and when you deviate from that, "It's not D&D".

And while their opinion has little baring on ME, that doesn't mean I don't want to argue with them. ;) I just want to be able to say I don't care what Gary said/thought without being accused of speaking ill of a dead man.

Well, the answer to the citing of the 1e DMG is simple. That IS how it's done...

in 1E.

It may be done differently in 2E, 3E, 3.5E, and 4E. And it'll probably be done a whole new way when they get to 5E in a few years, too.

Separating opinion from fact may be sufficient.

Liking or not liking the design is an opinion. What was the designer's opinion is a question of fact.

It's not just "old-school" people who cite Gygax! The appeal to authority is popular enough among those who neither recognize nor generally agree with it.

Rhetorical tricks that work upon an audience are often not very helpful for real dialog with people who have different views.

But I don't think the OP means disagreeing with him directly. I believe he means when another poster quotes Gygax, and basically uses it as an appeal to authority.

"I accept that was the author's intent, but I prefer a different approach".

Personally I like old school D&D rules, but I prefer Mythic Underworlds and Big Damn Heroes to Gygaxian Naturalism and Fantasy Effin' Vietnam.

Keeping in mind of course that while you can factually represent someone's opinion, the opinion itself remains just that, an opinion.

Rechan,

You can respectfully disagree with EGG just like how one would disagree with anyone here on the boards. Simply state you disagree, give a reason/anecdote/example as to why, and if others disagree back, that's fine.

I never knew the guy myself, so I cannot agree or disagree with any statements he said; however I can agree or disagree with any mechanics or books he wrote, give my reasons, and if I get smacked around a like a two-copper wench on these boards, well, so be it. But we can all agree to disagree.

I promise that if you disagree with me, I won't hold it against you. ;)

Happy Gaming!

Just to note, just because I post over on DF, don't lump me in with them. Many, and I do mean MANY of us do not appreciate the closed society attitudes of a few members over there.

So the rest of us just play by their rules and post about the things we can post about without getting them upset. After all, it is "their" board, not "our" board.

Now there are people, a couple of them have posted over on DF, who will get all kinds of bent out of shape even if you respectfully disagree with EGG.

So I think the important thing to know is that as long as your respectful and reasoned, Gary wouldn't have a problem with you disagreeing with him.

Ultimately, that is what matters, not how some overly sensitive people may react.
