How to run a short game? (and game summary)

Actually.. if it was a Short Run game.. what I would do would be create the characters for the players.. with a detailed history and behaviour for each character.. Some players find that getting the op. to play something out of the norm fun.

Okay, we had our first game Friday and we ran into a few small problems. It's a little more difficult to get a group of people to stick together in the modern world it seems. The players helped make it happen, but I thought that it was a little pushed on their part. We played for about 8 hours. Played meanin creating characters, introducing them to the setting and then starting the game. I do hhave to many NPCs, it was something I forgot to scale down. However, I think over all it went okay. WE had some great interaction. They are clued in to wierd things happening, but only in a vague way. This Friday, though things will get very interesting.

The characters are (all are students at the local college):

A Goth Wizard
A Student Filmaker
A Criminal Science/martial artist
An Acoounant in training with an alternate, monstrous form.
Sir to be created Friday (one of the PCs missed the first day)

Major NPCs are:
The proffesor who gave them all scholarships
The ecentric billioniare who funds the scholarships
A transfer student who just got out of the army and also has an alternate form

Week 2

I had all the important NPCs introduced last week, so this week I introduced a few lesser NPCs and really started on the main plot. It was a little on the slow side becasue I'm just concentrating on the main plot and a few side character things. Usually I have much mor egoing on. However, since I only have three more sessions I'm keeping it simple.

One of the things I'm doing is messing with all the characters backgrounds. So far 2 realize this, the other two may be seeing things change for them this coming session.

The main plot is one pof the students, the wizard, is being hunted by unknown whomevers. He has some clues on who it might be but is not really sure. So far there have been two seperate times that a summoned creature (shadow like dog things) have tried to kill him. The first battle I was really worried becasue the battle went bad, but they got through with no deaths. The second time they won easily.

Next week we shoul.d see the first encounter with the bad whomever. Also, the ante is going to be increased as we find out what these characters are truely made of.

And if my PCs are reading this (which I have no problems with and the reason everything is pretty vague), next week will be better since we don't have to worry about characters and people anymore. ;)

Well, week 3 was last week so here we will have weeks three and four. Cable Modem went down till today so i was never able to post it.

Last week we started off with props. I really like using simple props. I gave everyone a sealed envolope that they all got in the mail. The return adress for all the letters was Mr Hooper's Shop, Seaseme Street. This confused them and intrigued them. So, they each opened it and read the letter. Inside was a message telling them why the should abandon Ryan and Ryan's told him to basically give up hope. All the reasons IMO were good, solid reasons. I know that it's a group and they will stick by each other, but I try to give good reasons so at least it's hard for them in game. Then the papers exploded causing damage for everyone.

So, after that they did some research and found a run down section of town that actually resembled Seaseme Street. WEnt they arrived there they went over to Mr Hooper's shop and it was closed down and abandoned. Outside they heard the the theme music to Seaseme Street (Sunny day keeping the clouds away.....). It was very subtle so they only heard it when they were really trying. They brook into the place and did a little exploring. In the main room they were attacked by puppets. Hopefully, it was creeper for them then it sounds here. (If you're out there PCs, respond :D ). From there they explored the basement and ran into a snow elmental (or at least that was their best guess). After that they heard noises from outside and found an ice elemetal (again, thier guess) attacking the car. They thought that was a low blow. Attacking them was okay, but their car was below the belt.

From there things got complicated. They spot a guy on a building, they think he's controling the elemental. Two go after him, while two face the elemental. They get KOed, they other two go after the person. One climbs the building while the other tries to shot him. By the time one gets to the top the person is gone. It looks like the person just jumped off the side of the building. They try to find him, buyt have no luck. They get back to their fallen comrades and the Ice Elemental is gone. PCs actually forgot about it and didn't remember that fact till later.

So, two end up in the Hospital. THey get out, get attacked by shadow dogs and go back into the Hospital. In between they get one of their friends killed or kidnapped, and the FBI is really starting to look at these people. A lot of things are not adding up with their many stories.

Next post will be tonights session 4.

Modern fantasy is always fun! This is groovy, and you should write a storyhour, because right now all the different stories are confusing the heck outta me. ;)

I know I should. I wanted to orginally, but there are just so many little projects I want to do. As it is I only have one session to go. However, I will try to do this. It might be useful, especially if the campign exists for longer then the 5 planned sessions.

alright, YES. i was a bit disconcerting to get our butts kicked by MUPPETS. the worst part of all is we're trying to discover some hidden meaning behind it all (Sesame Street? Mr Hooper's Shop? animate puppets? what the hell is going on?!?)

just wait 'til you hear about session 4

THe seaseme street thing was taking something from childhood and attempting to make it creepy. Also, it is an Americian instituition of sorts and the German bad guy was using it to not only try to kill the PCs but to destroy your childhoods metaphorically. I didn't do the best job of getting that across in game.
