How we play the game: Character sheets

Heroforge all the way for myself and about 80% of our group.

I tried going back to pen and paper when I started playing a fighter, as opposed to a more complex to keep track of character, but I found that after 2 sessions I was right back on the computer.

PCGen 5.8.0 with the 3.5 and Complete Books data sets from CMP.

I used to use Heroforge but as that stopped being updated I moved to PCGen. Now I wouldn't use anything else.

Hi,

Most of us, including me, use the official D&D sheets from the Wizards site, although I am using an Arcana Unearthed "Magister" sheet for my magister PC (doh!). A couple of players use PCGen sheets and one types all of his characters out on a computer.

Cheers

PDF forms for me. I use a slightly modified version of the Mad Irishman's character form, and Ema's sheet for spells. I keep the character sheets for the group, keeping up-to-date copies of all the characters on a website known to my group. They like this - it means they get a fresh new copy of their character sheet at each level.

I whip up a .htm file for each character I play. It takes a little time but I prefer it that way.

attached .zip file includes:

Kinel Ithrood (Ice Tracker 6th lvl - Grim 'n' Gritty campaign) ... has printer friendly formatting

Khael Dawnbringer (Cleric 5 / Radiant Servant of Pelor 10 / Sacred Exorcist 2 - high powered campaign) ... this one is sort of a mess

I use a character sheet for the most widely used aspects of a character (stats, skills, saves, attack bonus etc...) Everything else is recorded on blank sheets of paper. At the end of a campaign the folder of a character is usually 10-15 sheets long.

For D&D, I use the "Ultimate Character Sheet" Mad Irishman made for Necromancer Games. For Iron Heroes, I made my own sheet because the one included in the book was way too small (if you have a class in the game that can have 30 skills maxed out with only a little powergaming, 12 write-in slots for skills is NOT enough). I then noticed that my sheet had too little space for feats and class abilities, so I made a new one.

One of the guys in our group is a whiz at page layout. Matching this with our usual flair for coming up with interesting options, we have, of necessity, created out own character sheets that are very much campaign specific. The current one includes room for Hero Points, Benefits & Liabilities, lost limbs, major wounds & scars, organizations joined, etc. It wouldn't be helpful to most other gamers, as it is set up specifically with New Mavarga (our campaign setting) in mind, but we love it! :)

I go through several different methods of making a character sheet. My last one was a form fillable PDF, the SSA-X2 one. On occasion I will use the official sheets and pencil for a character.

When 3.0 came out, I relied on the chargen program that came with the PHB, so much so that I never really learned how to make a character on my own. It hurt me later on down the line, especially since the program itself had some bugs in it.

These days, I prefer rolling up my characters by hand than relying on a program which may or may not have the math right, a problem I've run into with many a chargen program, "official" or otherwise.

Besides, I roll better than they do. :)
