How did you get introduced to RPGs?

I saw an half-hour long documentary on TSR and D&D on the Sci-Fi channel years ago. I thought it was a board game at the time. Since I was already into fantasy and was a big fan of videogames and console RPGs, I decided to give it a go. A couple years later, I got a really late 2E box set that no one ever talks about called the Adventure Box for Christmas. A year later, I got the 3E rulebooks when they came out on their first run. My brother and I taught ourselves how to play, which was really easy since we were already familiar with all the basic concepts from playing tons of videogames.

Since then, all of my purchases have been based on information from messageboards and perusing books at bookstores.

Grr I'm a monster!

I started picking up fighting fantasy books when they came out, then my mum suggested I buy D&D with christmas money, then I started my own group. This doesn't really fit any of the answers listed.

Can I choose the sort of monster I want to be when I grow up?

I loved Choose Your Own Adventure books when I was a kid. Also, wizards and the D&D cartoon. I stumbled upon the D&D Adventure Gamebook "The Sceptre of Power" in a bookstore and asked my parents for it. I loved it, and went on to play through most of the line. I also enjoyed the short-lived one-on-one gamebooks TSR released. Anyway, I learned from my neighbor that her brother played, and he wound up running a module for us: the Ghost Tower of Inverness. As it happened, I had just recently read through the gamebook based on that module, so I had a great time.

From there, I went to the Basic set.

He wound up giving me his stuff when he quit the game. I recall having one of the gamebooks with me in the elementary school gym during an assembly in 2nd grade or so and basing a story off of Tiamat and some stuff from the 1e Manual of the Planes and Unearthed Arcana in 4th grade, so I got a pretty early start.
