How would a character be transformed into a Shade?

In the Realms, there are creatures called shades who are the descendants of Netherise wizards who shifted into the plane of shadow before Netheril was destroyed. I was reading in the new "City of Splendors" book that the Shadow Thieves have struck a deal with the Shades and that some of the higher level guild members are being transformed as a reward. The only info I can find is that the transformation requires giving up your soul so you can be infused with shadowstuff.

It all sounds very ambiguous.

Does anyone know of any specific info that exists in any of the FR books/supplements that details this procedure? Any info you guys can provide would be most helpful.

Maybe the Shadow-Touched template from a certain Vicious Venue on the WotC website could be adapted?

There are no specific details on the Shade transformation process in any official Realms product, that I know of.

The Shade template itself is in the Main campaign setting hardback.

I think they pretty much leave it up to the individual DM to decide how they want to approach it.
