D&D 5E How would YOU build a Goliath Wizard?

I imagine I'd put my highest stat in Int.
Then my next two highest stats would go into Str & Con - because Goliath.

Not sure what skills & background I'd pick as those will be determined more by the character & backstory I come up with.

I love the idea. Obviously works best with rolled stats. Would be a tough sale with point buy. Low Int Wizards are pretty useless.

Point buy would get you 12 Str, 14 Dex, 16 Con, 14 Int, 10 Wis, and 8 Char or go 14 Str and 12 Dex for flavor. I'd probably stick with the high Con but 14 Str, 14 Dex, 14 Con, and 14 Int could work. I'd definitely pump Int at level 4 and probably at level 8 too if you got that far.

I like Goliaths. I've played a Goliath Cleric, Goliath Rogue, and of course a Goliath Barbarian. All rolled stats of course.

I have actually done this. Caveat - I make my Adventurer's League characters by rolling on a random chart I make for Race, Class, and Background, then doing my best to make it work.

Gærþ (Gaerth) - Level 3 Wizard (Diviner), Goliath, Entertainer Background (Proficient with the Hurdy-Gurdy)
Standard Array
Str 12
Dex 14
Con 14
Int 15
Wis 8
Cha 12

His Portent class feature has come in useful SO MANY times.

If I run him any more obv. the stat advances will go into Int.

First, ignore anyone telling you it’s a bad idea or not a “proper character”.

Next, don’t put any points into strength but do get athletics and don’t dump str, unless the background is that the tribe put up with him being weaker because of his magic, or that he left the tribe, maybe he hopes to return when he is more powerful and prove himself, etc. or, if you are in a world that treats Goliath differently, maybe that whole “abandon anyone who can’t easily keep up” thing isn’t even there, who knows.

But unless you want to be a gish, there’s no reason to put str above 12 (after racial mod).

Boost int and con, but don’t try to go above 15, and then figure out if he is charismatic, wise, agile, etc.

Then have fun playing a Goliath Wizard.

Reason for a high strength score is green flame blade. You don't have to play it as a typical wizard, its also why I suggested sorcerer as well. If you get into melee you get to use your racial power more.

My first spell would have to be the cantrip Fist.
I might pick up Door along the way, for the AC.

Oh and Magic Missile.

Right, like I said, if you want to play a gish, pump strength, otherwise there is no reason to.

Dunno. Probably pump intelligence and con, write up a huge background, then dump the whole idea as silly and make a proper character?

In a rolled stats world it is easy to get away with things like this vs standard array or point buy where you get cookie cutter builds and races. I do rolled stats in my game different than the standard way to close some of the random roll gaps between players
