D&D 5E How would YOU build a Goliath Wizard?

My first spell would have to be the cantrip Fist.
I might pick up Door along the way, for the AC.

Oh and Magic Missile.

Or take 2 levels of fighter first go heavy armor; con saving throw and action surge or 1 level and drop the action surge and you can take defense and get an extra +1 ac then the rest wizard better than using a feat to get armor

In a rolled stats world it is easy to get away with things like this vs standard array or point buy where you get cookie cutter builds and races. I do rolled stats in my game different than the standard way to close some of the random roll gaps between players

I like rolled stats for this reason as well.

Is starting with 14-15 Int instead of 16-17 really that bad to people? You'd have 5% less chance of hitting things with attack spells and slightly lower DCs. Oh well. By your 3rd ASI you'd have 20 Int anyway.

I'd build a Goliath Wizard by picking Goliath as my race and Wizard as my class. It works just fine.

The more important question to me would be: why is this Goliath a Wizard when it's something their culture doesn't value. With a good answer to that questions the character could be loads of fun to play.

Would this build work okay? I was thinking about it today.

Goliath
Wizard (was thinking Conjurer, but Divination would make more sense)
Sage - Astronomer
HP: 9
Str: 16 +3
Dex: 12 +1
Con: 16 +3
Int: 14 +2
Wis: 8 -1
Cha: 8 -1

Spell Save DC 12 Spell Attack 4

Saves:
Int +4 Wis +1
Skills:
Athletics +5 Arcana +4 History +4 Insight +4 Investigation +4

Spells:
Cantrips - Blade Ward, Mage Hand, True Strike
Level 1 - Chromatic Orb, Detect Magic, Identify, Mage Armor, Shield, Sleep

yes but your AC is going to be all kinds of terrible and you still don't have hardly any weapon options. I'd go 14 Str and 14 Dex instead of 16 Str and 12 Dex.

I'd go Divination or Abjurer

With Mage Armor it would be 14, and I could use Shield as a Reaction to boost it to 19.

And that doesn't account for any magic items I may get, such as Bracers or Rings of AC.

Standard array is a bit difficult. But point buy immakes it easy enough.

Str 12+2
Dex 13
Con 15+1
Int 14
Wis 10
Cha 8

Would be a possibility.
With your damage reduction reaction and con you are quite good at concentration checks.
You can use a staff in two hands for better than cantrip damage.
Later on you can take reilient concentration and later increase dexterity and con an extra time.
If you want to go all out on str, swap 13 and 12 in str/dex.
14 AC is not bad. You are on par with a rogue at level 1.

So I would use the +3 to stats to spread out the points a bit. I get that +5% concentration chance is nice I just don't like the negative to stats.

Str 14 (12+2) --- Carry capacity 140lbs or 70lbs w/ alternate encumberment rules, nice for carrying a lot of gear. Arcane focus: Quarterstaff +2 to hit Versatile 1d8 attacks of opportunity for 3-10 damage which is better than most melee cantrips and you don't need the Warcaster feat to fight/cast vs targets within 5ft.
Dex 14 Mage Armor (13+2) 15AC is not bad for a mage if you have the shield spell for 20AC when your actually attacked.
Con 16 (15+1) +HP + concentration (I would not go any higher)
Int 14 --- Main caster stat
Wis 8
Cha 8

Level 1: Spell Attack: +4 Spell DC: 12
ASI 1: Resilient (Con +1) --- improved concentration and resistant to more effects Level 4: Spell Attack: +4 Spell DC: 12
ASI 2: Int + 1(15), Con+1 --- To max level CON early for maximum hit point gain. Level 8: Spell Attack: +5 Spell DC: 13
ASI 3: Keen Mind/Int +1(16) or Linguist/Int +1(16) -- Level INT and some cool skills Level 12: Spell Attack: +7 Spell DC: 15
ASI 4: Int + 2 (18) Level 12: Spell Attack: +9 Spell DC: 17
ASI 5: Int + 2 (20) Level 12: Spell Attack: +11 Spell DC: 19 --- Tops out just the same as all the rest...

I like the Diviner but the build is irrelevant the class.

That is my build anyway.

TBH i would not. I do not like Goliath as a race concept for a start. A Goliath in my point of view is an attempt to make a halfgiant fit on a single square on a a battle mat.

If i would like Goliath it would fall under the single minded brute character. Some less, some more but for sure they would not delve into arcane or rogue classes. Maybe a valor bard or skald is the maximum approach i would consider believable, still very edgy, for this race.
