How would you handle....

Quasimodo

First Post
Party suspects BBEG caster in next room and are preparing to burst through door. BBEG knows party are there and has cast Gate directly behind door leading to magma lake in plane of fire.

How would you handle a pc bursting through the door.. ref save to avoid falling through gate?
If pc falls through, 20d6 fire damage for immersion is obvious but what about drowning? asphyxiation? (assuming ash or sulphuric cloud over magma and pc succeeds in keeping head above surface) swim checks due to currents in the lava? Would you be really evil and have the lake inhabited by elementals, efreet or salamanders?

In the plane elemental of fire you cannot breath, you cannot swim into magma lake I thing.
Quasimodo you are so evil :D.
A Ref save are really needed for all pcs who enter in the room if any PC falls into the gate simplemind he is probably killed I rule this first round 20d6 damage inmersion for the pc and every item too as if unatended the other pcs must roll surprise.2nd round 20d6 more and lost every item what has no one can survive after 2rounds maybe the others Pcs can do anything to save his 3rd round he is killed
each round rolls a 5% acumulative to see if any creature from this plane comes to see what happens.
I hope that helps ;)

Theoretically PCs open the door and see the Magma sea. No stumbling in there at all if one opens it...

Now if he breaks the door with a strength check while running through... I would give him no save at all.

I agree with Darklone.

Unless it is a heavy metal door that the PCs are forcing their way through on a charge, IMHO they should skill checks to notice the door is being destroyed by its proximity to the Gate.

The surprise Gate is a charming trick and I admire your ingenuity, but the RAW do not support this kind of thing. It does not make sense to commit the PC who opens the door to step through unless you also run a house ruled Initiative system where that same character automatically wins initiative. The character is penalized for opening doors, he should also gain the benefits.

This is really no different than casting a Gate in front of a charging character as a Readied action. Does the character automatically step through? Not by the RAW.

Silent Image to hide the fact that there's a gate leading to the elemental plane of fire. :)

Everybody forgets the power of illusions. :\

Think I'll go with Darklone on this... if PC's charge door to burst in with strength check (the 1/2 orc is partial to doing this, being rather impulsive, so there is a chance it'll happen) first PC through gets no save - others don't need to save since they can now see magma through gate and can act accordingly.

Does heat pass through the gate? If so I'll allow a rather difficult spot check to notice door heating up beforehand.

Thanks :)
