How would you play....?

Taloras

First Post
....a priestess of Sharess(FR). Goddess of sensualists, hedonists, etc. This is the character im thinking of playing (first time ill be playing a female). Why did i pick this one? I wanted to play a cleric. Figured id pick the diety randomly and go from there. So i close my eyes, open a page, and put my finger down on the page. Im pointing at the picture of Sharess in Faiths and Pantheons. :D I like the idea, but as its so different from my RL personality, im askin for a lil help. How would YOU play this character? Im wanting a few ideas.

Errrr *cough*...

That sort of character, to me at least, would be teaching the ways of her goddess, if you know what I mean. In a religious way of course...

I once played a Priest of Sharess in 2nd edition. He was a bard/priest. Vain, cocky, overconfidant, charming, sexy, and downright breathtaking were words I would use to describe him. He lived for sensations. Wine, women, song. Adventuring was a way to make him known...and get those sexy scars women love. And to have tales to tell as he relaxed in some luxurious bath. I even played him to the point where he had found a Helm of Brilliance. No small item, and one our DM was loathe to ever give. Well, my character would not take it. He just gave it away.

Why?

Because it would give him helmet-hair. How unsightly is that! And if it had a visor, it might obscure his face. Droll, very droll.

Don't get me wrong though. He was a very capable character. If you act flighty, people tend to underestimate you. All the better when they are scoffing at you when you drop that flame strike on them. ((Think Danilo Thann in ELaine Cunningham's books..with a clerical punch)).

All that aside, my advice is this:
Play the character and have fun. She is a hedonist after all. Make her useful but quirky. I'm sure you will have more fun than you think. As for being so different that your own personality? That's what roleplaying is all about.

While I have no personal experience in this, the description you wrote reminds me a lot of the Sensate faction (?) from 2nd edition (Placescape stuff). They lived for new thrills and sensations.

I would probably play this character as vain and arrognent (usually). And perhaps a bit on the wild side when it comes to trying new things for the sake of trying it for the experience. Things that lessened her own beauty would be avoided, though. And "appearance is everything" would be a good ideology to stick with (while not an absolute, it helps put in the frame of mind I'm thinking that this would go).

(just my two cents).

Yes, very much so!

I would play the character as having ennui. (Spelling?) Basically bored all the time unless they are experiencing some thing new, and then she should be manic.
One thing about "sensates" is that they are escapists. Don't have her be one. she should be experiencing to connect with her diety not withdraw from the world.

Well, she will relish live. She will see that all her urges are satisfied, all her senses are pampered. This includes all the things you will find books such as "Nymphology" or "The Guide to unlawful carnal knowledge", but it won't end there. She will travel comfortably, eat richly, trink abundantly, and make love frequently and passionately. She will of course make sure that she is healthy at all times (exercising herself so she won't become plump), for you can enjoy the finer things of life better if you keep fit. She will probably be vain, but she doesn't have to be arrogant. She might even be helpful, giving advise on how to improve and enjoy yourself. She will also be capable to defend herself, but she will of course use enchantments more often than evocations or the like.

I would recommend using "Encyclopaedia Arcana: Nymphology" for that one. The spells you find in this book might fit the style of that character (if you want to do some humorous spellcasting, but with such a character, you don't want to stick to necromancy), and they have use in combat without being violent - quick undress is not only useful in the bedchamber, and there's really no better way to incapacitate your enemy than to give him over to a moment of bliss (with Power Word, Orgasm).

I'd probably look up some Mage stuff on their cult of ecstasy tradition for some inspiration.

I don't do cross-gender PC stuff, but as an NPC I'd think up a bunch of options, empty-headed party girl, party girl facade to cover a schemer, tantrist who gets into the spiritual aspects of experience as a connection to the divine.

Keep in mind if you are playing a beautiful female in a party of males you are probably going to be harrassed (in-game) - I just finished playing a priestess of Sune and after being come on to by our half-ogre fighter I had to tell him, "You're too big for me, sweetheart." That got a lot of laughs.
