I voted "1 - Terrible" because I am not running any D&D campaign right now.

However, I am thinking of running something for my son and some of his friends--a "1e classics" campaign, where I'll run A1-4, G1-3, D1-3, and then Q1. (And probably something between A4 and G1, depending on their level at the time.) Converted to 3e, some of these will be much deadlier. And starting at 5th level will be a lot more fun for the younger players. My son actually has a character that he played from 1st to 5th level (we did the U1-3 mods, plus Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury with this character), so if he survives he will have grown that character from the ground up (and by playing many of the 1st ed. classics in the process).

I voted a 1. Why you ask? Let me get into it.

I'm currently involved in 3 PbP D&D games. One of them I'm co-DMing with another guy, another was a massive project that crashed a while back because of unstable rules and is now trying to start up again, and another is just a regular PbP D&D game that's just running rather slow. (Slow as in several days, possibly over a week, and we're still in the first round of the combat encounter that started the game)

Now, I suppose the last two don't sound too bad. The slow game will probably pick up the pace in a bit, and the massive one looks like it's on track.

But, the one I'm DMing myself is so awful, so much worse than just a 1, that it averages out the other two. Why? Because no one else joined. :(

I really like my current campaign. We've been going for over a year with this one with no signs of abating, the whole while I've been fighting my natural inclination to spring the story too quickly. It's great because there is suspense, and the players have time to think about what's going on, which generally leads them to hate the villains that much more. I have bad sessions, and sometimes (often?) suffer from poor judgement in plot planning. But there's no challenge like cleaning up your own mess. :D I rate it about an 8. I've been pretty consistent in my DMing the past few months, and the story has been pretty stable.

Mindblowing!

They surprise me at every step... roleplay their characters amazingly well...are creative in their tactics and spell-use....e-mail me if they have any questions or problems, and have challenged me to learn the rules just as well as they do. I look forward to playing and they show the same enthusiasm as I do. They are my dream game group, and I tell them often that I am both proud of them and extremely satisfied with our games.

We just passed the year one mark and I can't wait for the next!
I'm really jealous! Coming off one of the two games I run just last night, I would have to give the group a 3 or so. They had much more fun than I do overall; they laugh a lot in combat anyway. I wish there was a way I could inspire them to think creatively and be engaged in the story--there is nothing more frustrating to me as a DM than to watch seven people sitting around staring at each other going "So, what next?", with only two or three putting in anything more than a monsyllabic comment now and then.

My other group is much more fun because I click with them better on a personal level, but there's still an element in the group whose default mode is to wait to be led by the nose, which can get frustrating. I'd give them a 6 overall.

I wish more of my players were truly interested in the stories, engaged in the roleplaying, and proactive enough to act decisively with regularity. There's nothing more exciting to me than to watch a group of players explode into action and drive the story forward.

In one group I play in, on the other hand, I have a blast being one of those engaged, decisive elements in the story, and I know my DM appreciates it. I have a lot of fun in that game, so I'll give it a 9.
