D&D 4E How would you simplify character creation in 4e?

I'd do a starting packages based approach. You pick your stats group (which would be done via point buy), you pick your skill sets, and you pick your equipment. I would name each of this after archetypes so people know what's going on.

The primary reason why the multi-classing rules have oddities like those giant boosts to saves is that the classes were front-loaded so that first-level characters would not suck.

I think it would be cleaner and easier to make one level mean one level, whether it's the first level for that character or not, and to start characters off at a higher level if we want them more powerful.
