It is slightly better than 1d6.

Yup. Which makes it a Light Martial weapon that's better than the One-Handed scimitar.

It has to be either Exotic, or One-Handed, or do 1d4 damage.

I use this on my campaign world for a homebrew edition of D&D based on a heavily changed version of 2nd edition. I made it 2d4 vs S/M/L. But I'm also using a larger version - about 5 lbs, which is heavy for a falcata, historically. The same demi-human race that uses them in my world also uses kukris, which are the historical size and do 1d4+1.

This site is an awesome reference point for anyone who wants to add in alternate weapons, or come up with their own. It's for 2nd edition, but the math of damage and HP is pretty much consistent with later versions:
