D&D 5E How would you wish WOTC to do Dark Sun

There's very little known about Athas outside of the Tyr Region, so fleshing out a bit of what's beyond that region would be a good thing to do, they've detailed some of it in later books including Kreen Empire. Like where do the Nikaal come from? Of course they should also pretend that Mind Lords of the Last Sea never existed.

So, I have heard of Dark Sun but have not played or read it. After looking through this thread, It sounds cool. Where do I begin my journey?
You can get all the old stuff as .pdfs from the DMGuild.

If you want a physical book, then the original, 30ish year old books are pretty pricey... but there was a 4th edition WotC conversion a few years back that's probably much more reasonable.

If you don't want to shell out any money, you can also find plenty of fan conversions. Just google "D&D 5e Dark Sun" and you'll find some hits. The main challenges are that the setting is intended to limit player options from "standard" D&D and some of the core D&D mechanics violate setting assumptions. But the fan conversions offer ideas of how to work around those problems.

They should write it up in the timeframe of the fall of Kalak, either immediately before or after said fall. Maybe an opening adventure that connects to the fall of Kalak, either letting the PCs take part or be involved in some tangential way.

For classes and races, they should present the "classic" ones for the setting. Then they should explain which classes/races were not included and why. Then they should suggest how to include those if desired.

Approach it with a very toolbox mentality. Here's the default, but you can also do this.
