HP Designjet 3D Printer Now On Sale

or some one with access to a back catalog or old classics and a 3d scanner

That's what I was thinking.

I suppose if when this becomes feasible, miniature piracy will become a problem.

(Edit: I would like to demand in advance that any future mini pirates make sure their first efforts are either pirate or ninja minis; either should be appropriate for the first inappropriate use.)

I wouldn't be surprised if current 3-D printers would turn out pretty lousy 25-30mm miniatures; I imagine they aren't terrifically precise yet.

I've seen guides to making your own minis using rubber and resin, with specific application to miniature-heavy games like Warhammer.

Miniature "piracy" is already as close to being a problem as it's going to get. Well, unless 3d "ink" cartridges are cheaper than resin...

So... take:

1) A full suite of D&D minis across all sets. Or Games Wroksop minis, Hordes, Reaper minis -- whatever miniature you want;

2) Add a 3D scanner with sufficient resolution, a small platter and digitize your model

3) Import mesh into your (undoubtedly pirated copy) of 3dsmax/Maya/C4D

4) alter pose; change weapons, shield and pouches

5) export finished mesh to 3d printer

All of that is potentially doable RIGHT NOW with existing technology. The only issue is one of price.

It is entirely possible that in ten years time, this technology is affordable on the consumer desktop.

(And then they'll be whining about auto-painters!!)

All by way of saying, if you have Games Workshop stock - you might consider this thread your countdown to corporate armageddon. That event is now on the horizon. A bit far off still, admittedly, but on the horizon -- just the same.

WHFRP 3e is full of doohickeys which seem disproportionately difficult to pirate.

If their techniques catch on, we may be looking at 2 decades of proprietary dice & power cards.

I'd be more interested in using this for weekly terrain printouts. Less good resolution isn't as big a deal and having 3d maps for the session would be nice.

1 Hour Minature Army

Pretty cool. Go down to your local ye old hobby shop, pick your figures, plop down your money, and come back in a hour for your customized minature army. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Potential home use, too, as prices drop.

OK, spam, really. I have to find a better naming scheme for thread titles. :)

I had this flash of and idea about subliminal messages that cause people to post spam under their own accounts.... uh... I guess they are called adverts. Viral ones anyway.

I think this is just the start. I'm thinking it'll be with startups aka kinkos that'll cheaply print products for you given a model. Then of coarse that tech will trickle down to the rest of us as the high end evolves.

Rinse repeat until the low end is good enough for most everything.

Not only plastics, I'm thinking mixed materials as well.
