The big ears are visually eminent, and as certain manga and anime seem to draw from a rigid lexicon of nigh-hieroglyphic symbology, it's useful. For my part, when preparing Dungeon Damage, I decided that long ears were very expressive - I lived with a dog and three cats, and their ears are vitally expressive. So I had a reason to emulate the long-eared visuals, and put a lot of detail into them (you may notice that right from the start, the ears of tritons and elves are slightly different in their lobe structure and integration into the zygomatic arch).
