Just asking, Please explain.

Instead of allowing non paying members to search for a question that may have been asked countly times, you would rather have to answer it over and over.

I've been to other boards that after your question was anwsered they would "politely" instruction you in the many uses of the search feature.

Well, since most of us around here are enamoured with the sound of our own voices (sight of our own text?), no one minds answering questions multiple times.

Nice, btw. I don't think I've ever seen a Meta-Troll before.

One of the chief reasons is that when the search was turned on for everyone (and we have thousands of members), the boards were beaten into submission again and again. At one point, it was turned off for everyone, because it was too likely to crash the boards over time.

Morrus gives it to community supporters as a 'freebie' for helping to support the financial burden of the boards.

If you give me an idea of what you want searched, I could do it for you, if you like.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Translating Trollish to Common:

Wouldn't it be better to allow non-supporters to search, than to have the same question asked over and over?

No, for the reason I just mentioned....the boards cannot handle it. The boards used to crash all the time, and the search function was the first victim during testing for the problem. It takes an inordinate amount of resource to allow everyone the ability to search all the time.

Now, a 'sticky' FAQ file for every forum wouldn't be a half-bad idea.

A thing to remember is that we've got almost 100,000 active posts, and lots and lots of posters and lurkers. We're not like Nutkinland, with only hundreds of users...we've got thousands. The server, I believe, also hosts d20reviews and some sub-sites. It's a lot more than that.

We're also a lot more polite than some places. :)

Actually, you don't have to use the search function to access the FAQ. Of course, I never read the damn things, either. :D

Why can't I use the search function?

The search function is a very server-intensive process, and has a tendency to crash the server. In order to pay for a server powerful enough to run the function, I ask for a contribution from those who wish to use this function. To use the search function, you need a Community Supporter Account which will cost you $35 per year.

If you ask, often someone else will be happy to search for you. We have nice people!
