Hurricane Isabel and ENWorlders

Nice to know you had your priorities in order, Rel (Gaming stuff, then house. :))

Did the Raleigh area overall sustain significant damage? I never heard on the news just how close the triangle was to the storm.

We were on the edge of the storm for most of it. Sustained winds never went above about 25 or 30 mph with gusts up around 40. Oddly enough, there was this "rogue" band of heavy rain and winds that slipped out to the west of us and hit counties that figured they were relatively safe. My sister and her new baby were staying at my mother's house in Cary (her husband works out of state during the week). Fearing possible storm damage and loss of power, she went back home to Burlington, about an hour west of the Triangle. She got a lot more rain than we did.

From what little I've seen around town today, everybody has lots of leaves and small limbs down. Many have lost largeish branches out of some trees. A few (like me) have had sizable trees go down.

All in all, it is nowhere near as bad as hurricanes Fran or Floyd were (for me). Most people this far inland in NC didn't lose power for an extended period of time. Ours was out for a couple hours yesterday in the early afternoon but came on about 1:30 PM and never went out for more than a minute or so after that.

Bah. This storm was NOTHING. When it hit land it was a catagory one.

You people should try living through New Yorkan Nor'easters mid winter.

Not only do you have wind gusts up to 70mph but you have sleet, freezing rain, ice, and snow!
Bah!

I won't try to tell you how to post, ArthurQ, and I'll also preface this by saying that I tend to like what you have to say. But saying, "Bah! This storm was NOTHING" about a natural disaster that left 4.5 million people without power and killed 15 (so far), not to mention the wide spread flooding and damage to people's homes (mine included) and businesses, is not likely to win you a lot of friends.

Going on to basically say, "our storms are nastier than your storms so nyah, nyah" is not helping your cause either.

For the folks where I live, this is at least the 3rd major hurricane to hit us in the last 7 years, plus we had the joy of a devastating ice storm just this past winter. So we're a little sensitive about it. Maybe you could hold off on making fun of our plight for a week or so. How about waiting until the number of people without power is down to a million or so? Ok?

A Catagory 2 (or was it 1 at landfall) is not a major storm.

4.5 million? So? a whole lot more were powerless a few weeks ago If i remember correctly.

I'm not sayin the storm was bad. And i'm not saying the people werent resiliant. I'm just saying, be thankfull it wasnt like hurricane andrew.....or deloris....(or is that gloria?)

I think Art failed his "tact" roll. As a matter of fact, I think he fumbled on it.

I live in Yonkers, NY, 20 minutes north of Manhattan. My biggest (personal) worry is that the Mets game will be rained out tomorrow.

I pray for everyone who has to go through this storm.

Your prayers, and tact, are appreciated, Gnome Berzerker.

ArthurQ was right about one thing though: Category 2 is not a major storm. It is a hurricane. If it was merely a "storm", as in "tropical storm", it would have winds below 75 mph.

And, by the way, I'm sad to report that the death toll has risen to 17 and the number without power is at 5.5 million.

We trolls got through fine, thankee very much, matey! Our hatches were battened down, our jibs in a bit of of order.

the complex we are in lost most of the smaller trees and such during the ice earlier this year; this was lots of water and leaves but our timbers just shivered.

I was very grateful this thing had toned down a bit by the time it got here.

take care, me hearties!

I wasnt even making a tact roll. Look, we dont need to bicker over this. I've been through tons of storms in my life. Hurricanes and otherwise. My point is Isabel was not the huge punch it was made out to be, period.

Yes people died, yes i'm sorry for them and their familes. It doesnt change the fact that what happened here was almost nothing compared to what happened in florida during andrew, or in the southern coast during gloria (was that in the 60's?).

Its a force of nature, not a natrual disaster. A natrual disaster is what is left behind after a force of nature has taken its toll.
