hurried spell idea

not sure if this idea is balanced at all, so here it is:

cast a standard action spell as a move action, dex check DC 10+spell level. Failure loses the spell. Cannot use this to cast two spells in the same round


i think it'd work...most casters dont have awesome dex, and wouldnt risk losing the spell just to cast it quicker, but would allow multiclass casters to attempt to self buff and get an attack in the same round.

dex check makes sense to me, since it is hurrying a complex series of movements to cast a spell quicker.

what do you think?

Um, I think this is worth a feat at least. (In fact, there is a metamagic feat in Complete Divine that might do this... *runs to check* ...Not quite, Rapid Spell lets you speed up spells that take a full round or longer to cast for a one level increase.)

Based on Rapid Spell and Quicken Spell, I'd say a metamagic feat that allowed a standard action spell to be cast as a move action (but disallowed the casting of a second spell in the same round) would come in at about a two-level increase.
 

Also, its not hard to boost ones dex in this game. I like the idea and its great that you limited the casting of only one spell a round. It does make a good feat as Jester suggests.
 

Revised it sounds something like this:

Hurried Spell [Metamagic]

Special Requirement: Dex 15

Benefit: Casting a hurried spell is a move action. You cannot cast another spell in the same round as you cast a hurried spell. You may cast only one hurried spell per round. A spell whose casting time is more than 1 full standard action cannot be hurried. A hurried spell uses up a spell slot two levels higher than the spell’s actual level. Casting a hurried spell doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity.


Pure casters can cast a spell without attacks of opportunity should they feel its worth the extra spell slots, and multiclass fighters can buff and attack in the same round. I also changed the dex check to a dex requirement, to be more in keeping with other metamagic feats.

Balance wise I'd probably also drop "You cannot cast another spell in the same round" and "You may cast only one hurried spell per round" and replace them both with "This counts toward the normal limit of one quickened spell per round".

The problem is that this allows you to cast two spells per round (essentially as good as Quicken Spell, except for half the cost).

I suggest changing the verbage to something along the lines of "You cannot cast another spell in the same round if it has a casting time longer than 1 free action."
