Hybrid In-Person/Online Games

So I came up with this idea: run a live D&D session, and then narrate some substantial events online before running the next session (advancing years and levels in between sessions). It seems to me like an awfully good way to cover a lot of plot and character with a short amount of time. It also seems like it would be hard to make a plot suitable for such stop and go action.

I assume I'm not the first person to have thought of this... Anyone else try to combine PbP and live action gaming? Can a campaign cross from one medium to another and still be cohesive and enjoyable? An advice on how to make it work?

I've been considering doing something similar, with some of the RP aspects being played out on line between times our group can meet. I'm not sure yet that's what I'm going to do, though.

I could see it working for a game with both a social base, and a combat section. What happens in towns can be done mostly online, when they go to deal with an enemy, or go on a quest into the wilderness, then you need to be in person.

I'd say it'd work quite well for an urban game. When not actively fighting a threat, or being attacked, the story can become too multithreaded for in-person games, PbP works well for that.
When actively dealing with someone who's threatening/combative, then playing in person works well.
Just try and get the battles to coincide with when people can meet up.
