Choose a humanoid that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.
Doesn't say the humanoid you choose is also the target!

"Mark, I choose you!"
"Choose me for what?"
"Shut up, Mark. Nobody likes you."
The soap is paralyzed.

You can't move it, you can't get clean, you smell bad, your wife leaves you, you lose your job, the court takes your kids. Boom, for the cost of one 2nd level spell slot I've just destroyed your life and made it a living hell. What if I cast Hold Person on your debit card, BOOM you starve to death as long as I maintain concentration.

Now THAT'S magic!
I believe Prestidigitation can probably counter all of that. No spell slot required. :)
