D&D 5E I Failed My Kobayashi Maru Scenario

This thread has offered multiple resolutions. Op should think hard which one to choose as many of them are good and there is no right answer.

Bring him back and kids will jump in joy, keep him dead and they will learn a cold lesson.

If you bring him back though, you could make Snik want to talk to them about how he did not like the slavery he encountered, and that he has feelings as well. This might bring up a lesson about other persons feelings, no matter who they are.

"Snik hurt by rope, neck sore. Snik cannot cry. Snik not mammal. Snik hurt."

By they thought I'd let them try to bring him back and his soul refuse, let them learn he'd rather be dead than a slave.

Just as well he is dead as once they felt friendly with their new slave he would offer to help treat their wounds & poison them all so he can murder them all in their sleep. It's what they did to his friends & family after all & kobolds never forget.

Kobolds are sentient so not pets but slaves.

I think the original DMing mistake was to let the players roll. Like the "say yes or roll the dice" philosophy in reverse. If you need a particular outcome thwarting the players regardless of what they do or how well they roll is much worse than just fiating it, offscreen if possible.

You could try introducing a new sentient humanoid to haunt them from the shadows for a bit, stealing mundane personal belongings and just generally being a pest, eventually somehow joining them once its annoyed them enough! It could offer its services in exchange for its life or something!

I would have the players hear about a kobold warren nearby, have them seek it out, search it, and find Snik's stuff.

Off-camera, have one on Snik's hunting party (because they never travel alone, right) track the PC's and arrange some mishaps along their next adventure, perhaps even dropping a hint to a fictitious kobold warren laden with traps.

Turns out Snik was a member of Tucker's Kobolds and they never leave a man behind...

Id like read what is the result op ended up into. What happened?

We don't get to play again until next Saturday 1/24. Two of the boys have a Scout event this weekend.

When we play again I'll post an update to this thread to let everybody know how it turns out.
