I got to playtest Castles and Crusades!

Considering Gary's recent health troubles (and I hope he gets well as soon as possible), is Castle Zagyg going to be put on hold for a while? I mean, 8 huge books is a large burden for him to bear right now, I would think.

Gygax and Work Load

Concerning Mr. Gygax and his work load . . .

We've been in close contact with Gary and very concerned about his health and both he and I had long conversations this weekend. As we have plenty of Gygax material in the hopper right now (Hall of Many Panes/d20/LA, Castle Zagyg Part I, Lejendary Adventure RPG, GG's Insidiae) I thought I was safe in mentioning to him that he could take a few months off to recuperate.

I got quite the ear full, let me tell you! Suggesting that he take a holiday in the midst of Castle Zagyg was not such a good idea! ;)

At any rate he turned over the whole of the setting material for Zagyg in mid-April (that is part One, Yggsburgh) and that has gone into development already. He's begun working on Part III (part II being Dark I can't spell the word Chateaou) by Kuntz. He has time to take it easy and plans to do so. He will ease back into his normally monumentally huge work schedule without too much lost time.

I can say this: there is something specific about C&C that made my jaw drop when I realized it for the first time. It's one thing that ties many familiar principles together in a very fluid and flexible way - I think some of us are still picking through the ramifications of it all.

Now that the NDA has been lifted, the boxed set has been used by countless gaming groups around the country, and even the Player's Handbook has appeared on the shelves of some game stores, I'd be very interested in getting this riddle solved.

What was the single new element that made your jaw drop?

I can't answer for Fiffergrund, but for me it was that C&C truly uses a universal resolutions mechanic. The fact that making a saving throw is exactly the same as making a pick pocket check is quite an eye opener...

Yep, the resolution system that the game is built on makes it a breeze to run. I just ran my first game with the new phb a few days ago and extremely little time was spent looking up rules.

Agreed.

The 'core mechanic' for C&C is elegant and flexible. It solves all the frustrations I had with the different resolution systems in OAD&D and RC D&D, but without all the tiresome complexity of 3E .

I've run two C&C sessions. Aside from generating characters and looking up one spell description, we didn't need to consult the book at all during play!

:D
