So, if one were going to purchase an iPod, would the Nano be the way to go?

Depends on what they want. The main difference between the main iPod and the Nano is that the Nano has a flash drive. This means it has no movable parts and, if you're a runner or walk around with your iPod, there's no chance of it skipping.

LOL!!

I hate you, Del. I am still pining for a Mini, but it's outside my budget. :(
You better hurry, because the Mini is no more. While supplies last. The Nano has replaced the Mini, which is too bad. I bought my wife the Pink Mini, and we LOVE it. It is the perfect size--not too big, not too small. Feels great in the palm of my hand. It's just a beautiful piece of technology.

Also: it holds a lot less than a full-bodied, mature iPod. For $50 more than the 4 gigabyte nano, you can get a 20 gig iPod. Now, that may be more than most folks need, but 4 gigs is pretty easy to fill. Me, I like walking around with EVERYTHING.

i dunno, my iShuf does just fine with only 1 gig. admittedly, i tend to reload it nightly, but really, you're never going to listen to that much music in a row anyway. I mainly use mine when biking to and from the school i teach at, or when i'm on the trains to tokyo. but luckily, ipods come in many flavors for whatever your needs may be.

Minis are being phased out, huh? I always wondered about the point of smaller iPods, since they're small anyway. What's the point of getting a 4GB mini for $200 if it's only slighttly smaller than a 20GB iPod for $300?

Preference and intended usage. I wanted something that my wife would use easily for working out, but that would also hold a lot of songs. The shuffle doesn't hold much, and it doesn't have a screen. The full-sized iPod is too big for working out. The 6GB mini is a great size for working out, but it also holds all the songs we want it to (plus some). I've used the full-sized iPod (I have one at work). It's really nice, but the mini is the perfect size. At least for me. :)
