I just got Battlelore!

I traded in a bunch of comics today, and got Battlelore and the Call to Arms Expansion. Battlelore is a board game / wargame hybrid set in a fictionalized version of the 100 Years War that includes magic and fantasy races. It's designed to be playd in 30 minutes to an hour, and I think it will be a good fit for people who like the concept of fantasy warfare but are turned off by the expense of Warhammer or D&D minis.

I've played several sessions of Memoir '44, which uses the same game engine. Still, I wanna start casting fireballs at giant spiders! :D

Has anyone played it?

Yes. I've played the first couple of scenarios... mostly I've been playing M'44 instead, though. BattleLore begins to shine when the Lore rules are introduced. :)

Cheers!

I've got BattleLore and have played through a few scenarios - both with and without Lore.

The most important advice I have is to invest in some mult-compartmented plastic boxes and sort your units before you store them.

The problem with BattleLore is not the game not the rules. It's actually a pretty fun game and I enjoy it.

The problem with it is that the setup time for the game is too long when you are fishing about for units - compared to the time it takes to play it.

Most expecially if you have picked up Call to Arms - go to Target or Wal-Mart or Storage Solutions or >>>whatever<<< and get some boxes to sort and store eveything. It will reduce set-up time by = oh = 75% or so and increase your fun by a corresponding amount.

Not to mention that it will reduce the problems with bent figures, or getting all the pieces back into that tiny box. I've moved models into the Lore goblets, the card holder space and everywhere else they'll fit to ease up on the overcrowding.

Yeah, I expect after Agincourt we'll move right into the basic Lore rules ... if I don't want magic, I'll play Memoir '44. :)

Were you using Call to Arms when you had these problems? If I was running a premade scenario without a "troop draft," I wouldn't worry too much about whether all the swordsmen in a unit were of the right armour class.
