I'd go with the "tell him you changed something in the campaign course" and there after give him a vision of the god connected to the sword that he was chosen to bring the sword to someone (paladin) who is gonna be a real good nice and just king. Kinda Arthur.
Give them a hard time on their way there, defeat some major enemies and obstacles and let them become local heroes in that kingdom. Give them rewards and let bards sing their names.
That way every player gets an item or two which aren't that powerful and the ranger can enjoy his sword for some time. Perhaps give him the blessing of the god (some special ability).
