If the universe is finite, there's no such thing as "outside the universe." The concept of "outside" implies the existence of space, but if there is space, it is by definition a part of the universe. As such, a question of what is "outside of the universe" is just as irrelevant as asking what happened "before time", since "before" is a concept which does not exist without time.

Perhaps a too-technical answer to a half-joking question, but I felt like answering.

So if the universe is a d12... gee, no wonder this place has always seemed so barbaric, with violent events raging all over the place.

Could this be where Astrology comes from? I mean, 12 sides and 12 signs? In both Western and Eastern Astrology? Perhaps the reason why we have a 12-month year is connected somehow with the shape of the Universe? And a 2X12 hour day?

But science answers its own question of the in/finitness of the universe with the proven law of conservation of matter/energy.

Matter is conserved? If you mean matter as in atoms, it is not.

Besides, physics laws aren't proven. They're just ideas to which the universe seems to conform to, until measurements to the contrary are made. Like law of gravity seemed to govern the movement of planets around the sun, but Einstein came up with a more precise theory. After a while some irregularities in the trajectories of some planets were noticed, to the tune of Einsteins theory.

Physics is just a formal system that has an isomorph in the real world, but one can't prove the former with latter.

Or maybe it has something to do with the moon.

And a 2X12 hour day?

THAT has something to do with 24 beers per case.
