I know it was a joke but...(complete riding dog)

I did some special dogs (based on both training and breeding) for a project now lost in publishing limbo, and have kicked around the idea of a Dog20 project for quite a while myself. One idea I would like to play with is "classes" for animals which the trainer would pay the XP for. I would love to advance a pug/peke as a temple gaurdian dog which has to be trained by a cleric or adept and gains various divine abilities including keeping an area under the effects of a consecrate spell by "ratting" tiny evil auras.

Since I'm playing a halfling paladin/fighter/cavalier charge monkey, I'd love to see something along those lines. I'm constantly looking for ways to keep my riding dog alive. But I agree with Argent Silvermage, I think it would be a better book if it covered cohorts and companions of all types.

Raven, I would add to your dog breed list, the Queen's Companion. Tiny sized, decreased str, no natural armor, bad con. However, in the nation where is it bred, it is illegal for anyone not a member of the royal family or granted a special boon to own one, and injuring one is punished as an act of treason.

Nice.

I'm getting very worked up here.

I think that this could be great.

I would suggest variants on homunculi, and golems. (winged magical constructs, arming your pet golems, etc.)
Permanent animal enhancement
Training and tricks
Use of animals
Draft and food animals
Specialized species (giant lizards used underground like cattle, riding goats, etc.)

If you want any help with anything on it, let me know.

John

p.s. also add additional tricks, pets for all classes, cooperative feats, spells that involve pets
variant wild animals, etc.

I'd almost like to write it :)

Here are some of the thoughts that sprang to mind when the topic came up nine months ago...

Gotta say it looks good.

How do we petition WOTC to make one?

John

p.s.-I would also like to see if I could petition for hypersmurf, raven crowking, and argent to help with the writing

Hells yes, though maybe expand it to "Complete Underling," giving expanded discussion on Familiars, Animal Companions, Special Mounts, Generic Mounts, Cohorts, Followers, paid hirelings, villainous lackeys, and various combinations of all of the above (such as paid intelligent mounts or generic mounts used as Leadership-feat cohorts).

How do we petition WOTC to make one?
If only that would work. (*Wishes there were Draconomicon-style books for Fey, Goblinoids & Orcs, and Vermin*)
