I don't particularly hope anything about this...I just don't understand the conceptual difference between these two rulesets, one of which is in core and the other which is a module.


Well, neither is in the core or in a module, yet. However, they certainly represent different levels of up-front rules necessity for any given player or playing group (if all members of a group are on the same page). Seemingly, 5E is going to be rules-light at its core with modules to allow for an increase in the number of rules in use at any given table or any given time, so I suspect that you are correct that the core will have fewer and the modules will allow for adding more rather than the core having more rules and the modules explaining how to strip them away. You premise certainly makes more sense.

Don't you think it would seem like a good idea to start your playtest with the simple versions of the classes, and then add more complex versions later when they get round to testing the more rules-heavy modules?

There's a certain logic to that strategy.
