They are all good games. Any game that has kept the tradition alive and brought in more players in my opinion is a good game. OD&D, B/XD&D, AD&D 1 and 2, 3e, 3.5e. They are all good games. We would not have any of these if the one before it was not good.
As for nostalgia- We always remember the times it was good. Whether or not it was the first time... well that depends.
It is interesting. Looking back, in each system, there seems to be only one a couple of times in each system when it was really good. Here is a run down:
AD&D 1e: My friend Tony ran us through his version of Eye of the Serpent. It was the best time I have ever had as a player.
B/X D&D: It was after I had discovered WHFRP. I thought the Skaven were cool. I created an adventure where a gargoyle was infiltrating the town of Tantispur using Wererats. This adventure is still talked about. (and I have a suspicion it is the memory of this game that keeps putting me in the DMs chair when I am in their presence)
D&D 2e: When my friend Benjamin Inn ran us through the first part of Pharoh. We could never find the secret door into the Pyramid for some reason.
D&D 3e: Some of my best times have been at Cons. Ironicly RPGA games DMed by the likes of Erik Mona, Lisa Gordan and a few others whose names escape me right now.
D&D 3.5: No magic yet, but then again, its largely my fault. I don't think I have played enough yet to find it.
Aaron.
